The main reason that animals are abused is that the person who is abusing them was abused in their childhood. As a result the person might have had a bad experience in their lives and out of that they may not like animals. They might also have had other reasons, for example, drug or alcohol abuse, lack of a parent, spousal abuse or other things. If they abuse animals which might result them becoming criminals in the near future, and humans will be their next victims. Children might think that this is a fun game of some sort, but in real life it is not.

Other reasons are the circumstances. First of all, the person is not well or insane. Also physically, even though they are well; they might not be able to get around the house and be able to take care of the animals. Lack of food, less exercise, not being spayed or neutered, no treatment, especially lack of love are all factors of animal abuse. There are not enough homes and animals die in shelters, because of lack of food and proper care. They are basically unwanted and not taken care of.
People also abuse the environment, so animals are effected by this. A lot of animals are strays and are effected by the environment. Fires, earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes can result in animals being lost in them. Some animals are herbivores and can only eat plants, without them the animals become extinct. Pollution and littering can cause an animal to not have a home.
Animals are also used for human consumption and entertainment. Food, clothing, and medicine for treatment of transplants and testing are all used for humans. For entertainment purposes, some animals are treated with disrespect, especially in zoos and animal parks.

Therefore, people should love their animals and treat them with the respect as humans do to themselves and each other. Animals are people too and have feelings as well. They know when they are in pain. So, treat them well! There should be stronger penalties for those who abuse animals. There are only 22 states that treat animal abuse as a felony. The whole country should respect animals more.
